Head over Heels

It was a rough weekend for my right shoulder … even though – or because – we were at the cottage for the entire time.  First off, we forgot to pack the chairs we use to sit on the dock.  So, instead of sitting on the dock facing northwest some of the time, I stood in the water leaning on the dock with my right shoulder facing the southwest the entire weekend.  Net result:  a sunburned right shoulder.  Added to this was the fact that I had a “weekend project” up at the cottage – painting the inside of a new little pantry cut into a corner wall.  The space was cramped … the angles awkward … and the project required three coats of paint.  As right-handed as I am, my right shoulder took the bulk of the abuse.

It is for discipline that you have to endure. God is treating you as sons. For what son is there whom his father does not discipline? If you are left without discipline, in which all have participated, then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time as it seemed best to them, but he disciplines us for our good, that we may share his holiness. For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.

Let us pray. We give thanks to You, almighty God, that You have refreshed us through this salutary gift, and we implore You that of Your mercy You would strengthen us through the same in faith toward You and in fervent love toward one another; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Story of the Pillbox

Somewhere between five and ten years ago my cardiologist recommended, as a simple precaution, that I start carrying nitro in my pocket.  He wrote me the prescription, I picked it up at our pharmacy, and then started carrying that little dark brown glass bottle in my pocket.  Sometime after that as I was transferring the pills from one location to another, I dropped the tiny glass bottle on a tile floor … and it cracked wide open!  That’s the story of my first pillbox and its contents.

After these things the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the LORD came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the LORD, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Promises, Promises!

Or is it “Problems, Problems, and More Problems!”?  At first glance, one might think that the problems side of the proposition wins out, 3-2.  However, I would suggest, since the promises come from our Creator, Redeemer, and Comforter – the One True God – they easily trump the problems, if we will only let them.

O Lord, grant us wisdom to recognize the treasures You have stored up for us in heaven, that we may never despair but always rejoice and be thankful for the riches of Your grace; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

Time Flies!

You know the expression – “Time flies when you’re having fun!” As much as I agree with this statement, there are times and ways I would like to edit it. Like, “Time flies when the Tigers are winning (like this week!)”. And, my favorite, “Time flies when eyes are open to seeing the blessings of the Lord Jesus.” Of course, from my perspective, all three statements are talking about having fun.

Chaos … Chaos … Control

The more I talk to people, the more chaos I see in our world today.  For some people the chaos is in their family … either their own homes or the homes of immediate family members.  Many feel like they don’t know where to turn, or, for some unanswered reason, just can’t see the light.  For others the chaos is in our government … or the world … or their neighborhoods.  Emotions here often include anger, fear, or that simple feeling of being helpless and/or hopeless.  The chaos can also appear in our bodies, our minds, or who-knows-where else!  Like Martha in last Sunday’s Gospel reading, we try (want, wish) to control things (people) that are not ours to control.

So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, “Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place and not spare it for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?” And the Lord said, “If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake.”
