“Just as you excel in everything – in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us – see that you also excel in this grace of giving.” 2 Corinthians 8:7

IRA – Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD)

You can make a difference and save on taxes. It’s possible when you support Saint Thomas through your IRA.

Do you own an IRA? Are you 72 years old and older?

If you are over the age of 72 (previously 70 72) and own an IRA, you are required to take a distribution each year called a Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Your RMD’s are taxed unless you direct your IRA. administrator to send a portion or all your RMD directly to a qualified charity such as Saint Thomas. If you do so, it will not be taxed. This is called a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) and benefits you and Saint Thomas.

Why consider gifts from your IRA?

Most importantly, you would be assisting Saint Thomas and its mission. With fewer individuals itemizing their deductions under current tax law, contributing through a QCD reduces your taxable income and is a benefit even if you don’t itemize your deductions.

How do I make a QCD?

The distribution of a QCD must go directly from your IRA to Saint Thomas; it cannot be distributed to you and then from you to Saint Thomas. Contact your financial advisor or the administrator of your IRA account(s) (such as Thrivent) for the process and form to make the contribution.
