Oh, The People You Will Meet

Yesterday morning provided the most interesting start for the day.  I just wish I could remember the names of all the interesting people with whom I had the privilege of interacting.  Unfortunately about a half dozen people for whom I am praying today will simply be “you know their name, Lord Jesus” on my list.

O Lord, grant us the Spirit to hear Your Word and know the one thing needful that by Your Word and Spirit we may live according to Your will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The Lord spoke to Moses, saying, “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, I am the Lord your God. You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not walk in their statutes. You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God. You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules; if a person does them, he shall live by them: I am the Lord. . . .

Mid-Night Ramblings

As I lay in bed while Tuesday turned into Wednesday, my mind rambled in many different directions.  At one point I thought through an entire Thursday’s Thirst – but it’s long forgotten now.  Stories, faces, fantasies all thrown together, yet without rhyme or reason.  Whether I was awake or asleep I am not sure, but I do remember saying to myself, “These things do not have any connection or pattern!”

Hark, the voice of Jesus calling, “Who will go and work today? Fields are white and harvests waiting Who will bear the sheaves away?” Loud and long the Master calleth; Rich reward He offers thee. Who will answer, gladly saying, “Here am I, send me, send me”?

Vaca Mode

This past Friday Monica and I began our annual two-week hiatus at the cottage.  Sunday afternoon our two granddaughters joined us.  Then, Tuesday night, the middle generation came on board.  I think it’s tomorrow that two more will arrive.  Thus it is without apologies that I tell you that I am in full “Vaca Mode”.

GRIT

It may be that the best way to define GRIT is to simply say “Detroit Lions”!  Even when they are behind it still feels like they should win.  One star gets taken off the field on a stretcher, the next guy up does more than one could ever expect … and the team keeps winning.  They believe in their coaches … they believe in themselves … they believe in their teammates … they expect to win every week.  Hopefully this coming season we will see more of the same … with a lot less injuries.

The season of Pentecost has arrived! With the arrival of the Holy Spirit, this season of the Church Year is marked by growth. We see evidence of the growth the Spirit is seeking in this week’s Readings. The Lord and giver of life seeks to see His people grow faithful hearts through faithful worship, resulting in faithful service. When the way ahead isn’t as clear or as comfortable as we would like, we rely on the Lord’s wisdom, leading us back to His faithful servant, Jesus Christ, who clears the obstacles of our sinfulness and comforts us with His Word and sacramental gifts.

Blessed Father, from You comes all that is, and we are forever indebted to Your grace for the gift of life. Receive this day our special thanks for the redemption You have provided in Jesus Christ, Your Son, and for the work of the Spirit in bringing us to know You by faith and to be adopted as Your children by Baptism into the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
