She turned 80 a month or so ago. She has no living relatives. She was struck with polio at age 6 but was able to work for the FBI for over 40 years. She now suffers from restricted lung disease. She was admitted into the hospital earlier this week – I think it was for a nosebleed, but I’m not sure. The morning before I visited her she had fallen out of bed and fractured her hip. Yet all she wanted to talk about was how much she appreciated my visit and – most importantly – how good God is. And all I can say is an attitude like this is such a wonderful gift from God … God at Work.
If I listed her age, I would likely be giving away her identity. She has buried her only two children and has no grandchildren. A stroke has slowed her down some, but whenever I visit with her the line she repeats multiple times – almost sort of interrupting me – is “Praise the Lord. Bless his holy name!” God @ Work.
They are elders covering their congregation’s homebound visitations because they don’t currently have a pastor. The smiles on their faces tell most of the story, though the joy in their voices is also noteworthy. They rejoice over their visits and relate multiple narratives illustrating the activity of God in these visits. G@W.
When I first started to visit him almost a year ago, he did not want to live. He balked at the physical therapy prescribed following his stroke, which likely was related to other issues he had brought upon himself. He liked the fact that someone had come to see him, however as I came to see him month after month his attitude never changed. Then one month he started reading the Portals of Prayer I had left with him and everything changed. Now he is back home, walking, and cannot stop talking about how good and gracious Jesus is … usually with a few tears of joy in his eyes. God at Work.
“Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear and come to me; hear, that your soul may live; and I will make with you an everlasting covenant, my steadfast love for David.” (Isaiah 55.1-3)
God is at work in his people. The richest food he offers is his word … he is constantly at work in it, changing us … usually starting with our attitude … but always offering so much more … even eternal life. G@W
