I am sorry about last week. I was out of town without my laptop, taking a complete break. In case you are interested, we had a great eight-day getaway – traveling through Sarnia to Niagara Falls, then to Buffalo to visit with the Hartke’s, and on to Cape Cod to visit my cousin Pam and my Aunt Jean.
We got home Saturday afternoon and it was immediately time to reboot. After driving in from Rochester NY on Saturday Monica proceeded to do all of the laundry from the trip while I wrote a sermon for Sunday. By Sunday afternoon we were both ready to crash on the couch (after planning the week ahead). I meant to get over to the Bethlehem’s Family Fun day, but I couldn’t find the energy to get off the couch.
I am not sure if this rebooting is good news and bad news, or just life – adjustments and changes, blessings and opportunities. I have been talking about “retiring” from my two-day per week early morning grandchild care activity when school begins (both girls will be in school full-time), but it started (my retirement, that is) a week early as I had no responsibilities this week. This will reboot our Tuesday/Thursday mornings to a more relaxed pace (I think).
At the same time, I have suddenly found myself visiting four people in palliative care! And there are the usual visits … catching up with the mail and banking … Circuit Visitor communications … social and lawn mowing commitments. It’s funny how we were gone just one week and it feels like so much has changed. Like I said, rebooting is just about life – adjustments and changes, blessings and opportunities. The ones I am experiencing are the easy ones … the rebooting going on in those families in palliative care are not the same.
Through it all, it is comforting to know that I am not in control and that I don’t really need to understand what-all is going on. In so many ways, I am just along for the ride! So my simple prayer is that my Lord Jesus keep me flexible … always ready for the next reboot … and to use me as best he sees.
Or, as many of us will hear read in worship this Sunday, “Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgements and how inscrutable his ways! ‘For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?’ ‘Or who has given a gift to him that he might be repaid?’ For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.”(Romans 11.33-36)
I really think this is what rebooting is all about.
