Backfire!

Backfire!

I am what you might call the antithesis of a mechanical wizard or small engine expert. I have no clue as to what causes an engine to backfire or how to remedy the situation. However, when my lawnmower or anything else run by a small gas engine backfires as I turn it off, I believe it is not a good thing. My problem is that I generally then forget about it – until it happens again the next time I use the machine.

Faithfulness

Faithfulness

Many years ago, a wise old gentleman said to me, “Faithfulness is a long journey in the same direction.” My, how I have been thinking about that over these last few months. I was all geared up to handle the pandemic through June – even July, but now it is getting tough – and the end doesn’t even seem to be in sight! What is a person to do?

Michigan Right to Life Petition to Ban Dismemberment Update

Michigan Right to Life Petition to Ban Dismemberment Update

In a sad development for the pro-life movement, the long-awaited result for the Petition Drive for Banning Dismemberment Abortion in Michigan is now in, and apparently the State Bureau of Elections has decreed that we have fallen short in the number of valid signatures necessary to pass the petition due in part to Planned Parenthood challenging the legitimacy of some of the signatures. Laughing with Jesus

Laughing with Jesus

I laugh every time I read Jeremiah 29.11 – “I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” This promise was originally given to God’s Old Testament people as they were being hauled off to exile in Babylon, assuring them that after 70 years God would bring them back to the promised land. However over the years, I have found them to be speaking clearly to me in many ways – especially when coupled with some words from the major prophet right before Jeremiah: “My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.” (Isaiah 55.8)

Social Distancing in Worship – Phase Two

Social Distancing in Worship – Phase Two

As of Sunday, August 9, STL will no longer have reserved or assigned seating for worship.  Instead, for the foreseeable future, sections of pews will be labeled “No Seating Please.”  These markers will keep all open seats at least six feet apart.   As you arrive for worship, please continue to wear your face mask (at least until you are seated and when you are in the hallways).  On your way in, pick up a worship folder and select an available place to sit.  While family members are encouraged to sit together in the open areas, we ask that you to sit at least 6 feet away from anyone else.

Have you registered for the Lutheran Adult Gathering?

In the early days of the Church, “All the believers were together and had everything in common” (Acts 2:44). This is a picture of God’s people gathered by His Spirit together in fellowship, empowered by His Spirit in faith, sent by His Spirit to share and serve in Jesus’ name. This picture is also the theme of the 2020 Lutheran Adult Gathering. Join us at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, October 9-11, 2020, as we celebrate our LIFE TOGETHER in Christ, in service, with hope. Our speakers will encourage and challenge us as disciples of Jesus and offer suggestions for us to take back to our congregations. The gathering will also include a panel discussion with all three speakers surrounding the current situation in our country under theme LIFE TOGETHER-A Great Multitude (Revelation 7:9).

Lutheran World Relief Backpack Program

Lutheran World Relief Backpack Program

HIS II is once again participating in the Lutheran World Relief Backpack program. Education is one of the strongest tools a community has for breaking the cycle of poverty. Ensuring that girls attend school, especially in places where their access is deprioritized, has even stronger results. Lutheran World Relief works closely with our overseas partners to determine the best contents to include in kits.
